I Think My AC Needs a Repair, but How Can I Tell?

With summer fast approaching, you want to make sure that you never have to spend a day without the relief of a cool home. Think your AC might be due for a repair? Here are some of the biggest warning signs to look out for.

You Hear Unusual Noises

A good central air conditioner is soundless, so when you hear noises like banging, clicking, screeching, or whistling, there's most likely a problem that requires a technician's attention.

Does the sound start when you turn on your AC and gradually fade, or does it run consistently? Some cases, there may simply be a loose screw or bolt, but more persistent sounds could indicate a problem with the motor.

The Temperature is Inconsistent

If your AC is running but your house still feels hot, humid or muggy, chances are that your system isn't fully operational. There could be a lack of refrigerant, or there might be a problem with the central mechanism that's causing the AC to blow hot air instead.

Air conditioners sometimes struggle to effectively cool a home when the temperature outside hits 93 and above. As long as your thermostat is set to the right temperature, there shouldn't be any major problems cooling the house.

Check the air coming out of your vents and outside unit. If there is no air or the air is warm, your evaporator coils may need to be replaced.

If your AC is constantly running or can't cool down the house, you definitely need to schedule a service call and get to the root of the problem. Continually attempting to cool a house with a defective AC only costs you more money.

The Air Quality is Awful

Air filters need to be changed every 90 days or so. Unfiltered air in the home can cause you to suffer from a variety of physical symptoms like headaches, coughing, sneezing and itchy, watery eyes.

People with allergies may have worse symptoms in the house, or you might suffer from wheezing or breathing discomfort if you have asthma or another respiratory illness.

A dirty filter can also obstruct proper air flow, leaving your home hotter than it should be and putting a strain on your system.
